The second year of medical school ends with the Introduction to Clinical Medicine Program. The Clinical Clerkship program begins in the third year. In the first two years of medical school students focus on basic knowledge of health and disease and are introduced to the care of individuals and populations.
In the third and fourth years, students become directly involved in the care and study of patients. They begin towork with team members caring for hospitalized patients. Third year students rotate through the following clerkships: twelve week rotations in Internal Medicine and Surgery; six-week rotations in Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The 4th year consists of 30 weeks of electives. Introducing the student to the various fields of medicine and enhancing both their clinical and diagnostic skills, the Clerkship Program is designed to ease the transition between Basic Sciences and Postgraduate training. As the student transitions from pre-clinical to clinical studies, the essential role of physician is realized in the practical application of their knowledge and skills.
